The Apex Christmas Nativity Celebration in Apex, North Carolina, has become a holiday tradition for many in the area, who come to see the hundreds of nativity scenes from all over the world and to hear their children sing in school choirs.
The free celebration, held this weekend, includes an exhibit of more than 800 nativity scenes from more than 50 countries, as well as a festival of music by school, church and community ingredients. The largest nativity scene is a lifesized one outside, with volunteer actors. The smallest can fit in a matchbox.
In addition to the main display, there is a children's room with touchable nativity scenes and a dress-up area where children can dress up like characters in the nativity and visit and Old Bethlehem market area.
The event is hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will be open today and Saturday at the Apex Stake Center on Bryan Drive in Apex, across the street from the post office.
Some 550 volunteers have been involved in setting up the event, now in its eighth year. It is expected to get more than 4,000 visitors.
Some 125 community leaders also attended a luncheon at the event on Thursday to celebrate joint humanitarian projects carried out by various churches, humanitarian organizations and government agencies in the area over the past year.
On Friday, the exhibit was open for tours and musical performances for residents of nursing homes and retirement centers in the area.
